Open Stream Information
The Open Streams are 'free for all' streams that anyone can DJ on at anytime.
The only real rule is its got to be hard music you play, otherwise, anything is fair game.
We are cool with you using the streams to test your setup, try new setups, or to generally fuck about on, but please ensure the stream title you set in your software has 'test' in it somewhere (like 'test stream' or 'testiclies' or whatever just as long as the word test is in it somewhere) when doing it, so the website knows not to post your broadcast on facebook and shoutcast.com. Of course if you are broadcasting a proper mix and not just testing, set your Stream Title to something descriptive, Your DJ name is a good choice, and it will be pimped on Facebook and shoutcast.com automatically around 2 mins after you connect. Feel free to stop reading now if you know how to use SHOUTcast streams already.
Configuration Details
Requirements
To DJ on the Streams all you need is some broadcasting software that is SHOUTcast compatible and around 192kbps of available upstream internet bandwidth. (see *note 1 at the bottom of the page if you are unsure about your internet connections upstream bandwidth).
Once you have a setup that works on our Open Streams it will work broadcasting on most other Internet Radio Stations as they practically all use the exactly same SHOUTcast server software as we do.
Broadcasting Software
If you are still reading, I will warn you the other Software options can be pretty confusing if you have not hooked your DJ kit up to a computer before, or, are reasonably adept at using audio and network applications in general.
The most popular software used to broadcast is:
If you are going to be broadcasting digitally as well as with your kit, I would strongly suggest using Virtual DJ for now, It just works pretty painlessly right out the box for most scenarios you come across.
I would not advise using SAM broadcaster at all (as it is shit for DJing) but I listed it because it is nativity SHOUTcast compatible and often talked about by people as an option for SHOUTcast streaming. I would not advise using Traktor for now either for exactly the opposite reason, although it is possibly the most powerful DJing software... as it is sold, it does not have all the features required to stream on a SHOUTcast server, and is a total pain in the bollocks to set up to do so unless you have some experience with SHOUTcast streams.
Software Configuration
Once you have the software installed, it is pretty simple to configure. You only have to configure it to broadcast to an Open Stream noone is currently broadcasting on using the details in the table at the top of the page. (Our Stream Sponsors have step by step setup guides on doing this on their Support Page). Please ensure to set your Stream title to 'Test Something' before conntecting. This is done in Virtual DJ by typing 'Test Something' in the 'Name' option or, if using the Winamp DSP, in the Description config under the 'Yellow Pages' options, If your thinking huh? it will make more sense when you see the config screen. Now connect and start DJing... Simples.
Other Information
When you connect to one of the Open Streams the website will update the status of the Stream to show that you are live. It will display 'Current DJ' which it will pick up from your Stream title, so set your Stream Title in your broadcasting software to your DJ name.
When you connect, the website will also automatically make a posting on Facebook that you are streaming, along with your Stream Title, and register your broadcast to be listed on shoutcast.com. Do not abuse these features, otherwise they will be removed.
*****************
*Note 1: The upstream bandwidth requirement will not be a problem for most people as most upstream internet connections are, at least, twice the requirement, you only need 192kbps free, and for example, if your upstream speed is around 1Mbps, which a lot are, you have over 5x the required upstream bandwidth.
If you are on some budget internet tarrif and you keep getting 'Buffering' errors when broadcasting, there is a chance your upstream internet connection is, uermmm.. to put it bluntly, shit.
You can check by pointing a browser at http://speedtest.secondstreams.com which will test your upstream internet speed. If your upstream connection does not meet the 192kbps requirement you will struggle to Stream without hichups, pauses and long sliences. The Download speed is irrelevant when streaming, so just ignore that bar.

Broadcasting Software
| If you just want a simple way to try digitally DJing on the streams for the first time from your computer, and have no decks, CDJS, Mixers or the suchlike, I seriously suggest you just download the free demo version of Virtual DJ 7 PRO from http://www.virtualdj.com/download/free.html and skip everything else right up to the Software Configuration section. |

The most popular software used to broadcast is:
- SHOUTcast DSP plugin for Winamp
- Virtual DJ
- SAM Broadcaster(posted for completeness, I do not advise using it)
- Traktor Pro (posted for completeness, I do not advise starting out with it)
